The greatest showdown of our time? 3PM shine versus a full face.
We asked our friend, resident oily skin haver, and makeup artist Madeleine Grace to see these two mortal enemies face off in the ultimate battle: A 9-hour weartime.
But! This time with Very Mattifying Primer in her arsenal.
Before she got started, we asked Madeleine her makeup pro tips and tricks for matte skin:
“Thin layers and intentional placement are everything. Most of us don’t have just one skin type across our whole face - we might have an oily T-zone, dry cheeks, or a balanced forehead with an oily chin. So, really knowing your skin is key to getting the finish you want and making it last.”
“Also, with skin prep, keep your products light. Heavy layers underneath your makeup can make the whole base less stable. It's like trying to build a solid structure on a mudslide—it’s just not going to hold!”
Here’s How The Wear-Test Went Down:
11:50AM: First Impressions
“As suspected everything laid over that primer like a dream. Everything is sitting beautifully. It is currently 11:50 in the morning, so I have a full day of wearing this and can really put it to the test. Consider this check-in number one. I'll see you in a couple of hours.”
2PM: Check In Two
“My skin, dare I say, looks incredible. You can see it is glowy in the areas that I have placed highlighter, but it is still matte in all the areas I want smooth and perfected. I'll see you in a couple of hours.
6:30PM: Check In Three
“This is the official 6.30 check-in. This is how my skin is looking. No touch ups except a little bit of lip gloss. I am so impressed. There is a little bit of radiance, but usually at this point I would be covered in oil. From this point onwards, consider me impressed.”
9PM: Final Thoughts
“I've had this on for nine hours now. And you can see my oils are starting to come through, but not too aggressively. It's a yes from me.”
“Everything still looks perfect without feeling flat! Since I’m oily and breakout-prone, I also really appreciated its skincare-first formula that controlled oil throughout the day without causing any breakouts. It’s such a winner in my eyes.”
