What Is Buriti Oil And How Does It Work?

Bitchy skin beware.

The skincare-making wizards at the hallowed peach halls of the Go-To HQ love a little ingredient called buriti oil. Why? ‘Cos bitchy skin hates it.

This ultra-moisturising oil is the answer to some of your skin’s most annoying habits: redness, dryness, roughness, irritation, and those awkward pillow creases on your face after a big nap (no).

What is buriti oil?

Buriti oil (pronounced bu-ri-ti) is a powerhouse skincare and haircare ingredient.

Like most great things (sweet potatoes, Shakira, Paddington Bear, etc.), buriti hails from South America. The oil is derived from the fruit of the native Mauritia flexuosa tree, a palm found in the swampy depths of the Amazon rainforest and long believed to be a symbol of life and vitality.

Rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin A, buriti oil is known for smoothing, nourishing, and moisturising the skin.

What does buriti oil do?

Stopping just short of cleaning your oven, buriti oil does a lot.

First up, it replenishes your skin and helps to restore your skin barrier with a hefty dose of fatty acids. Best understood as the ‘mortar’ to the skin cells’ ‘bricks’, fatty acids help strengthen your barrier to protect against damage, dehydration, and irritants while maintaining the skin's elasticity.

But it's the antioxidant properties that really help buriti reach the status of superoil. Buriti is one of the plant oils most concentrated in beta-carotenes, a precursor to vitamin A. Beta-carotenes protect the face against free radicals—the bad guys trying to make it unhappy and damage your face’s skin cells. It also promotes cell turnover to boost your overall complexion while inhibiting melanin production to help reduce pigmentation.

Not to mention: If you’re looking for a gentle, effective way to relieve redness, roughness, or irritation, buriti has serious anti-inflammatory properties as well.

Who should use buriti oil?

Buriti oil is suited for all skin types and a bunch of skin concerns.

  • For breakouts: it restores your skin-barrier (a major culprit behind acne).

  • For dry skin: its hydrating fatty acid properties helps to nourish the skin.

  • For dull skin: by inhibiting melanin production while increasing cell turnover, buriti oil helps to brighten your complexion.

  • For ageing skin: it increases skin elasticity and promotes cell turnover to target fine lines.

It’s also pregnancy safe. (Don’t let the vitamin A reference scare you. Buriti is only rich in provitamin A, rather than the real deal.)
