Wearing sunscreen, every day, is one of the best and easiest ways to protect the appearance and health of your skin. We know this. You know this. (Tell us to zip it, already!) (We won’t.)
So you’ve made SPF a daily ritual, but we have to ask, have you mastered the getting-unready-from-the-day bit? Because any residue or product that lingers on your face while you sleep could cause some havoc with your complexion.
Why it’s so important to remove SPF every night
SPF creates a protective barrier against UVA and UVB rays. An important one at that. But if you don’t remove your sunscreen completely, this can lead to clogged pores, dryness, irritation, and annoyingly welcome breakouts to the party. Ick.
Our faces naturally collect a lot of grime and build-up throughout the day - thanks to your friends sunscreen, makeup, sweat - and this has all got to go before you hit the sack.
When your face is clean clean, the rest of your night-time routine (serums, oils, moisturisers), can better do their job.
How to properly remove your SPF
Daily
Say hola to oils! (If you haven’t already!) Because Double Cleanse is your new best friend:
- Apply your oil-based cleanser to a dry face
- Massage into the skin for 60 seconds
- Take a warm, damp muslin cloth and wipe your face completely clean
- Follow on with a gentle, water-based cleanser
- Massage into the skin for 60 seconds
- Splash with water and pat your face dry
- Continue with the remainder of your PM products
Note: Oils attract oils, so don’t be afraid to lead with an oil cleanser if your skin regularly sports some shine. It will gather up the excess (sebum) while breaking down sunscreen and makeup. Nice.
Soft and Clean The ultimate one-two punch for soft, clean skin. Double cleansing is ideal for faces slathered in SPF, makeup, skin care, or an adorable colony of pastry crumbs. Includes Properly Clean and Fancy Face nourishing oil cleanser.Double Cleanse
Weekly
Beyond the daily double cleanse, you might want to bring in some additional skincare support.
Incorporate an exfoliator 2-3 nights a week to help slough away any dead skin cells and keep your skin barrier as bright and bouncy and fresh as can be.
And come Sunday night, set aside some time for a deeper clean. An antioxidant-packed clay mask will replenish the skin while it detoxifies, getting rid of any unwanted impurities setting up camp beneath the surface.
