So you’ve just washed your face.

Finally! You’ve only been waiting all day to do this

And just as you finish patting your face dry from those final drips of water, your skin is suddenly hit with an overwhelming feeling of tightness. It feels so obscenely parched, you have to race through your skincare routine to get to the hydrating steps for a moment of relief.

For some, this may sound like a distant nightmare. For others (me), this is the typical experience of washing your face.

But rest assured, a better cleansing experience is out there. It just takes finding your right cleanser.

Why Your Skin Feels Tight After Cleansing

That tight feeling isn’t just your skin being totally free of the day’s impurities. It’s actually a combination of water loss and lipid loss in the outermost layer of your skin (that’s the stratum corneum). Technically, it’s your skin becoming less elastic

Your skin barrier is held together by lipids and a harsh cleanser won’t just remove dirt and excess oil but work away at your skin’s lipids as well. Without those lipids, water escapes more easily from the skin, leaving the outermost layer dehydrated. As those surface skin cells lose water, they become less flexible, creating that familiar tight, taunt feeling after cleansing, when you smile, talk, or move your face.

What Causes Your Skin To Feel Tight After Cleansing

That squeaky, taut feel isn’t necessarily the sign of a good cleanse. It’s your skin telling you something about your routine.

  1. Your cleanser is too harsh for your skin. Some cleansers remove not only dirt and excess oil. If your skin is particularly oily, it will target that build up on your skin. If your skin isn’t, it targets your skin's natural lipids instead.

  2. Your barrier is already cranky. When your barrier is already compromised, a cleanse that’s a bit too thorough can remove even more of the lipids and moisture your skin is trying to hold onto, leaving it feeling tighter, drier, and more sensitive.

  3. You’re overwashing. Washing your face too often, cleansing for too long, or rinsing with very hot water can remove more of your skin's natural oils than it has time to replenish. Even the gentlest of cleansers can leave skin feeling tight if you're simply overdoing it.

  4. You're using active ingredients. Retinal, retinol, exfoliating acids, and acne treatments can make skin more vulnerable to dryness, meaning a nourishing cleanser becomes even more important.

How To Stop Your Skin Feeling Tight After Cleansing

In the case that you’re washing your face 73 times a day, then stop that. But in all other instances, the fix to that tight feeling is changing your cleanser. Even just temporarily.

If your cleanser is too harsh for your skin, find one that actually meets your skin’s needs. (We have a quiz for that.) (You’re welcome.)

If your barrier is already cranky, amp up the barrier-repairing ingredients at every stage of your routine. That means, using a hydrating, gentle cleanser until your barrier is happy again.

If you’re using active ingredients, look after your skin with a nourishing, comforting cleanser. Just as your skin adjusts to these new treatments.
