My DIY Facial For Healthy, Clear Skin

Once a week - generally Sunday afternoons while the children take a class at the school of Pixar -  I close the bathroom door and perform a very simple, but very effective at-home facial.

It’s equal parts relaxing and results-driven and is especially useful if I have an event coming up, or video or photoshoot (weirdly, when you’re founder of a skin care company, people have high expectations of your skin…?!) or, if I am stressed and my skin is wigging out and I need to hit restart. 

It doesn’t take long (around 25 minutes) and is definitely worthwhile. Good daily skin habits make a lasting, overall difference to skin health, but facials, whether at-home or in-salon, are just as important for intense cleansing and nourishment. Plus you get a REAL nice glow afterwards.

This is how I (and now you?) do it.

  1. Cleansing oil. I use Fancy Face to get rid of makeup and SPF (because remember: the rest of your skin care won’t work properly unless you cleanse properly first) and to balance and replenish my skin. As with all oil cleansers: I apply this with dry hands on a dry face and massage for at least 30 seconds before rinsing and removing with a damp, hand-hot Posh Cloth.
  2. Water-based cleanser. I second cleanse with our mousse cleanser, Properly Clean, on damp skin to leave skin so clean and so ready for the rest of the routine. Rinse again.
  3. Exfoliation. Next is Exfoliating Swipeys for a nice, thorough, gentle chemical exfoliation. The lactic acid gets rid of dead skin cells and instantly brightens. I leave it on for 60 seconds and rinse.
  4. Clay Mask. Ahh yes, the step I’ve been doing for the past year but couldn’t tell you about: our brand new clarifying and purifying clay mask, The Removalist. This creamy fruity-bubblegummy-scented mask clears out pores and draws out impurities, but is also (uncharacteristically for a detxifying mask) brightening, soothing and hydrating as well. A solid clay clear-out is essential for all skin types because we all have pores, and we’re all wearing SPF everyday (right? RIGHT?), but they’re particularly helpful for breakouts, or acne-prone or oily skin types. It stays on for 10 minutes or until dried down and then I remove it with a hand-hot Posh Cloth again. It do this once a week, but congested or oily skin types might want to do it twice.
  5. Nourishing mask. The Removalist hydrates and comforts the skin with its glycerin, sunflower seed oil and antioxidants, but if you can, I suggest rounding out your ‘facial’ with a creamy nourishing mask. (And please take it all the way down to your chest.) I like the Cosmedix Restore Mask, or the Aspect Probiotic Mask, both of which are rich, thick and replenishing. I pop it on for 10-15 minutes then gently remove any excess residue (my skin tends to eat the lot) with a warm face cloth.
  6. Mist. Before I move onto serums, oils, and the like, I will usually mist the face with some calming, hydrating face mist, which helps the serums to penetrate. I like Mukti or Sodashi
  7. Serums. Hyaluronic serum next. After a clay mask, I avoid using any actives (AHA, BHA, Vit A, Vit C etc) and instead soothe and hydrate. (In the first half of the facial, we took off and took out with double cleansing and exfoliation and the clay… now we put back in.)
  8. Face Oil. Each morning and night I follow my serums with our hero product (by name and by nature) Face Hero. It was created with 10 plant-based oils (including buriti, known for its anti-inflammatory properties) and delivers a rapidly-absorbed hit of replenishment, essential fatty acids and antioxidants.
  9. Face cream. After I’ve applied all my lovely serums and oils, I wanna lock it in with a thick occlusive. Cue Very Useful Face Cream, which I will take all the way down to my boobs, because as we all know, that’s where your face actually stops.
  10. Lip balm. They need love, too. A lap of Lips! does the trick for supple lips.
  11.  Skin appreciation. I marvel at my very clean, glowing, bouncy skin and I bloody marvel at what a few products (okay, nine) and 30 minutes can achieve. 
  12.  Probably take a selfie. Oh, I’m far from immune to the lure of the front-facing camera, don’t you worry about that.
