Courtesy of its contradictory name, dry oil can lead to a decent amount of chin tapping and brow furrowing. But we promise, it’s a thing!
Much like ‘boneless ribs’ or ‘dry wine’, when these two contrary ideas team up, the results are pretty friggin’ great.
Lightweight and fast-absorbing, consider dry oil: an oil without the oiliness.
Confused? Walk with me.
So, what is dry oil?
The ‘dry’ (of dry-oil fame) actually doesn’t have anything to do with the oil’s texture. Instead, it has everything to do with how it interacts with the skin.
A blend of lightweight ingredients, dry oil soaks into the skin quick smart, leaving behind a barely-there feel and no smidgen of residue.
‘Wet’ oil (not a technical term, but you get the idea) tends to be what we usually think of when we think of ‘face oil’. Designed to nourish, restore, and replenish, these types of oils - ahem like our thoroughly tried-and-true Face Hero - tend to leave skin bright, deeply replenished, bouncy, and ready for makeup.
Dry oil is a great pick for those who just can’t get around the feel of oil because it all but disappears but still delivers on the skin barrier support ‘traditional’ oils offer.
What skin types can use dry oil?
Technically, all skin types can use a dry oil formula, as this term refers to how it feels on the skin, rather than the ‘action’ it provides. What you want is to pick up a dry oil targeted to your specific skin concerns, ‘cos not all dry oils are made of the same stuff.
For our more oily skin havers, dry oil’s non-greasy and fast-absorbing qualities make it a pretty perfect option.
Putting oil on an oily face might seem counterintuitive (or damn right unholy) but think of it as fighting fire with fire (or oil with oil, if you will).
With the right ingredients, dry oils can provide a seriously good solution to breakouts, redness, and excess oil. Even better, its non-oily finish won’t aggravate whatever shine you might already have going on.
When to use dry oil in your skincare routine?
Not all dry oils are made the same. So, when to use them in your routine really depends on the specific dry oil.
In the case of Clarifying Face Hero, our dry oil is supercharged with ingredients to support blemish-prone skin.
Where the original Face Hero has some serious Big Sister Energy that restores and replenishes, the Clarifying Face Hero has a classic case of youngest-sibling syndrome.
More than happy to assert its uniqueness, Clarifying Face Hero boasts a blemish-banishing blend of ingredients that have been clinically proven* to reduce the number of pimples, improve the appearance of breakouts, and balance oily skin. Think of it more like a treatment oil than a nourishing oil.
With that in mind, Clarifying Face Hero can make itself at home in your AM and PM routines just after cleansing but before moisturising and SPF. So, it should look something like: Properly Clean, Clarifying Exfoliator, Clarifying Face Hero, Very Lightweight Moisturiser, and finally, Nifty Fifty Mineral.
Best of all, our dry oil plays well with others (like AHAs, BHAs, or retinols, acne treatment medication and clay masks) so it’s a pretty seamless addition to your existing routine.
